“Give us a sophisticated version of ourselves.” Was the charge by the Harney family when they appointed us as their design team for their flagship store in New York City on Broome and Crosby. The challenge was to translate the brand’s New England charm to the streets of SoHo. Our approach was to simply direct the DNA of the company and exploit it in the design. A family own business with grass roots past that travels near and far to tell the story of tea. We were charmed by the family and their story. We elected to place the tea bar at center stage and let the rest flow around it. We specified wall colors to signify the fun and youthful nature of the younger family as well as the generation that established the business originally. All of this with an eye to do something both new and comfortable. That moment where one feels I’ve been here before and I’ve never seen this before. The Broome Street flagship store is now an icon in New York City.
